The Ex-Files: The Ex-Laker and His Leading Lady VanishAug 18 2004 by The Cosmic Detective
In Tinseltown, the love pendulum - much like Anne Heche - swings both ways. While hotel heiress Nicki Hilton (the sister without the raunchy sex videos) wed her financier fellow in a quickie Vegas wedding over the weekend, another celebrity couple was swinging into divorce court. That's right - basketball hottie Rick Fox and his leading lady Vanessa Williams called it quits after just five years of marriage. To be frank, I thought they were married longer. These two felt like an institution. Are we so dump-friendly in Hollywood that five years now makes for an institution? It used to be ten. Is love longevity in the City of Angels - much like the housing market - becoming so unreasonable that we're accepting less than we deserve for more than we can afford? Here's what I know for sure about the Laker and his leading lady. They had a good run. The Lakers were on an amazing winning streak these last few years. And that's been good for Ms. Vanessa as well as her man. However, with the breakup of Kobe and Shaq, they're about to embark on a losing streak. And to top it off, Foxie just got traded to the Celtics. Plagued by injuries (according to my sports source), the Fox Man doesn't have too many playing years left in him. Let's face it folks. Vanessa's no dummy. She's more of a calculating player than Kobe. How else could she survive a business that stripped her of the ultimate beauty queen crown only to rise from the ashes to create a semi-legit singing career and a sub-par acting gig? She knows she's at the height of her mediocre game and isn't about to be de-throned again. What's a survivor like Vanessa to do? Move on. As for Foxie, he'll come out on top, too. Even impending retirement can't detract from his mega-watt smile, his millions in the bank, and his legendary Laker pedigree. So what if the lady vanishes? Another one will be along shortly. That's the way the pendulum swings. Related Articles The Ex-Files: The Demise of Dunst and Gyllenhaal Aug 5 2004
