Worried and Depressed Over the Election? Here's a Celluloid Solution

Yes, George Bush is now and will be the P-P-President. Oh, what to do? The answer - with apologies to Simon and Garfunkel - check out some old movies. To put this electoral phenomenon, er, situation, er, incident - -the thesaurus is drunk again - into perspective, and maybe gain some understanding (of what, we are not clear), DeadBrain suggests starting with the following oldies.

Hud: This 1963 classic starring Paul Newman as the cynical, crude Hud Bannon portrays West Texas at its most vile, in the form of Hud's despicable rejection of his father's (Melvyn Douglas) values. The take-away line from Douglas: "You don't give a damn...you got all that charm...you just live for yourself."

We could get into absolutism versus subjectivism, and theories of acceptance intertwined with the death of a sibling as they relate to U.S. foreign policy - but hey, we're here to have fun. Note to Steven Spielberg: How about a re-make with Newman in the Douglas role, ah, sweet symmetry. Let's do lunch.

Elmer Gantry: This 1960 movie stars Burt Lancaster as the fast talking evangelist preacher Elmer Gantry, who also destroys those around him through an exercise of pride, greed, envy (there ARE seven of them), in the seduction of both worshippers and Sister Sharon, who is literally destroyed by Lancaster's character.

The promise dangled to entice, but never delivered, drives Gantry. The take away lines: "You're all sinners...You'll all burn in hell!" and "Tell 'em Gantry...save 'em from sin...lead 'em to salvation...tell them about everything but not about your whiskey and your woman." Fire and brimstone at its best (worst). Zell Miller would be proud.

If you're not into seduction leading to personal destruction, try two movies that are essentially the same: The Music Man and The Wizard of Oz. Here, belief is both the question and the reward. See, good things can happen if you just believe.

And, what the heck we'll throw in Deliverance because, let's face it, that's how we view them. (Does that soft, chunky Ned Beatty remind one of Karl Rove? Just a thought.) Great banjo.

Enjoy.

Editor's Note: Got a favorite pre-year-2000 movie you think is relevant to our current political lives? E-mail the title(s) to comments@deadbrain.com, and we'll make a list! Everybody loves lists...
