A Dysfunctional Family of Five Reviews...Spanglish!

Writer/director James L. Brooks just isn't satisfied with conquering TV (The Simpsons, Mary Tyler Moore, et al). His follow-up to the acidic character study As Good As It Gets is another acidic character study which makes known his intent to conquer filmdom! And to finally get a good sandwich in Hollywood.

Dad: Adam Sandler as a chef? Not only don't I buy it, I'd never eat it. Mel only knows what he'd put in the gumbo.

Mom: I can't believe [Tea Leoni's mother character] forces her girl into smaller clothes. Is she trying to sex her daughter up? Or am I just having an awful "Color Me Badd" flashback moment?

Sis: But Mom, you cut the tags out of my clothes! How am I supposed to know whether I'm glaringly fat or disgustingly emaciated? I need the number, Mom! I NEED THAT NUMBER!

Bro: My secret friend Paco Tostada told me that everything they say in Spanish in this movie is a lie. He smells better, too, after that last trip through the washing machine.

Baby: Ever since The North Avenue Irregulars, Cloris Leachman's owned me. Too bad the whole movie isn't about her character. Meanwhile, just as you can't generalize As Good As It Gets to all relationships at their rocky beginnings, neither can you generalize Spanglish to all marriages at their rocky points. Not even the five percent of marriages that include nannies, whatever one of those is. These people aren't like you and me. That's why they're on that big screen, right?

Verdict: Rental.
