New Decorating Style Lets Stars Live Like Regular Folk

The DHHG Terror Alert: West Elm Disease

In Hollywood, where the rich and famous can get anything they want, what they want these days is designer Barron Smith. With his bold new decorating concept called Staregular®, Smith transforms the lavish homes of stars into replicas of those of regular people. Except for much, much more money.

Pop star Britney Spears was absolutely thrilled with the trailer park-inspired living room Smith designed for her and new hubby Kevin Federline. Says Smith, "The room is fantastic. It's an exact copy of a typical double-wide, with awful paneling and this funky couch with one leg that looks like it was chewed on by an out-of-control pet." A trademark Smith touch is the distressing on the couch cushions to simulate the look of wear from years of sitting.

Of course, while it may look regular, the room is actually Staregular®. The fabric for Britney's couch was hand-spun in a village in India that makes all of Smith's fabrics. It takes 20 women an entire year to weave the cloth for one couch. Similarly, the wood for the paneling comes from ancient trees in a remote region of the Brazilian rain forest. The reclusive Pachagau tribe cuts the trees using special tools passed down through generations. The village elders then bless each piece of wood before it is painstakingly handcrafted to resemble tacky 70's paneling.

Another recent Smith project was a bathroom remodel for Courteney Cox-Arquette, whom Smith adores. The cramped bathroom features a vanity that's an exact copy of one the star saw in a local Home Depot. "Courteney has an amazing eye. She knew immediately the piece would be mundane. When everything was done it looked so regular that even I was blown away."

What's the secret of Smith's success in a town filled with talented, creative designers? "I'm giving these stars something they can't get from anyone else – a feeling of being a regular person, but done in the finest materials for the astronomical prices they're used to paying." Designer Barron Smith. He's no regular designer. He's "Staregular®!"
