DHHG Supports Allies with "Batty for Britain" Program

The DHHG Terror Alert: The End of Patio Season!!!

In response to the recent events in London and the continued climate of unease, the Department of Homeland Homes and Gardens has announced a new program to show support for our allies across the pond.

Working closely with the United States/United Kingdom Coalition, the program - "Batty for Britain" - seeks to strengthen relations between the two countries. Its primary focus will be to encourage Americans to explore the world of flowery prints, overstuffed sofas and antique pine furniture that represent the English decorating ethos.

Designer Laura Ashley was initially named honorary spokesperson, until it was pointed out the design icon had actually died in 1985. The post was then offered to Michael Payne, the elfin English host of HGTV's "Designing for the Sexes." Payne, known for his use of ornate prints in his room designs, quickly accepted, saying "I'm happy to send the message of USUKC to the rest of the world." The "Batty For Britain" team then introduced a bill in Congress that would eliminate import taxes on all marmalade and tea cozies.

Critics in the U.S. immediately challenged the BFB program, suggesting that florid English prints are contrary to the fundamental American decorating ideals. A statement issued to the press by "Americans For American Décor" read, in part, "We feel this is a serious misdirection of resources. We should remember that we left the so-called 'Mother Country' over 200 years ago. One look at those awful prints should be a reminder as to why."

Defending the program, BFB responded by saying, "All we're trying to do is show a little solidarity with the Brits. They've stood by us, and we just want to say 'Thanks.' Or whatever word they use in their language." The BFB further stated, "The English aren't just about fussy prints. What about British Colonial? That's a great look - all that wicker and dark wood. You can go to Pier 1 and furnish an entire apartment for like, fifty bucks."

BFB has scheduled an afternoon tea for members of the décor community. Scones and Devonshire cream will be served.
