Katrina's True Lesson - A Spiritual Offering of Hope

The DHHG Terror Alert: MARTHA!!!!!

Many have struggled to make sense of the events of recent weeks. In times such as these we turn to a man who, perhaps more than any other, can put what happened into perspective. These are the healing words of the great Dalai Lama's interior decorator, Chuseng Wat Lhuksnys.

When Hurricanes Katrina and Rita arrived recently, they ruined homes and property with callous disregard. Objects that had once symbolized achievement, comfort, and happiness were gone in a matter of hours, washed away with the swirling waters.

But alongside this terrible loss, is there, perhaps, a lesson in the catastrophe that can help us not only heal today, but also prepare for future disasters? We must look within for such an answer.

We live in a culture of ownership, of accumulation. Our objects are precious to us, yet time after time when survivors were interviewed, they said "It's only stuff. We can always buy more stuff."

Is this the true answer? Replacing lost "stuff" with new "stuff"? The more "stuff" we own, the more have to lose in such an event. Is, instead, the real lesson of Katrina that we be less attached to all this "stuff" in our lives? That we, instead, divest ourselves from the worldly encumbrances we surround ourselves with? That we live simply, with fewer possessions?

No. That's absurd. I just want to say one word to you. Are you listening?

Plastics.

Obviously the lesson of this storm is that we need to have stuff that's waterproof. If most of our possessions were plastic, they would survive getting wet. And, they would float - and therefore rise with the water, making it easier to find them later. Plus, plastic doesn't break, so you'd be totally covered in an earthquake, too. And with recent advances in polymers, a wide variety of colors and style are available to suit any decorating taste. As the old proverb says "Only a fool lives near water without the benefit of polymers." And we are not fools, my friends. We are not fools.
