Paul Newman Elected to Satirists Guild for Fox News Mockery Aug 21 2003 by Allen Voivod After satirizing the Fox News lawsuit against Al Franken in a New York Times Op-Ed article, Paul Newman was unanimously elected to the International Satirists Guild as an honorary member. "This, of course, will be the pinnacle of Mr. Newman's career," Guild President Douglass Ramssmullett said via telegraph from Oslo, Norway. "He has had to travel a long way, through Hollywood and the retail food product industry, to finally reach the rarefied air of the successful short satirical essay." The article, published August 19th, mocks Fox News for suing over the use of the term "fair and balanced" in the title of Franken's new book. Newman joked that he intends to sue the US Department of Housing and Urban Development, or HUD, for besmirching the reputation of the farmhand character "Hud," which Newman played in the eponymous 1963 movie. Newman then brought the point home by naming members of a "coalition of the willing" which would henceforth label their products as "fair and balanced" in order to bait Fox News into further lawsuits and force the network and its anchors to broadcast from a courtroom indefinitely. In a statement posted on the Newman's Own website, Newman said of the Guild action, "It is the beginning of a compelling and rewarding partnership." It is possible he was instead talking about a partnership between America's Second Harvest, Newman's Own and Ford Motor Company to improve food distribution in rural areas, and that his quote was taken out of context. Honorary memberships in the Guild were first established by past-president Mark Twain in 1906, who bestowed the first one on Helen Keller. In granting her membership, Twain called her one of the two most interesting characters of the nineteenth century, the other being Napoleon.
