Playboy, Hustler File Indecency Suit Over Abu Ghraib PicturesJun 1 2004 by NMPuff
Playboy and Hustler have jointly filed actions in Federal Court to prevent further release of pictures form Abu Ghraib.Claiming that the pictures are pornographic and violate public decency, both founders of their respective magazines have also called on Attorney General Ashcroft to ban further pictures, or any others from the military. Emerging from a Viagra haze long enough to comment, Hugh Hefner said he was appalled by the nudity, sadomasochism and exploitation of human beings. "It's shameless," said Hef. In addition, the suit claims that by releasing pictures and video the military is competing with established private enterprise. "How would they like it if we raised an army?" huffed Hustler founder Larry Flynt. However, in a further irony, Ashcroft may now be required to back the release of allegedly pornographic pictures. The media and Congress have petitioned Ashcroft to defend the release of pictures and video as a Federal matter under the Freedom of Information Act by arguing against an injunction. Further, because of First Amendment implications, Ashcroft's office contacted the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) to assist in using a First Amendment defense against any proposed injunction. "Defending the First Amendment is not something we know much about," sputtered Ashcroft. Ashcroft is described as apoplectic at the thought of working with the ACLU to defend the release of pornographic material and is considering resigning. In an attempt to understand the issues behind the suit, DeadBrain discovered that the recent releases of photos and videos have cut into the circulation numbers of both publications. "Why buy Playboy and Hustler when you can see this stuff in the afternoon paper?" said an attorney for the plaintiffs. "If the government wins in allowing military porn we could be in trouble. Put another way, if the government fails to defend the First Amendment, [Playboy's and Hustler's] circulations will skyrocket." When asked why the suit was filed, Larry Flynt said "Because we felt like it." Related Articles New Iraqi Prime Minister Says to Bush: "Disarm or We'll Disarm You" Jun 2 2004
