Nancy Reagan Files Lawsuit Against Estate of Ray Charles

Former First Lady Nancy Reagan yesterday filed a federal lawsuit against the estate of Ray Charles, alleging the singer's death overshadowed publicity for what she called "Ronnie's Final Victory Tour."

"Ronnie was a kind and decent man who dedicated his life to America," Mrs. Reagan said. "For Ray Charles to die and take away from all Ronnie's accolades is selfish and uncalled for.

"Ronnie and I followed Ray's career from when he first appeared on the Ed Sullivan Show as Little Stevie Wonder and onto his musical successes as an adult," said Mrs. Reagan, who also bristled at rumors that she was trying to collect her husband's frequent flyer miles for his back-and-forth cross-country airplane flights after his death.

A spokesman for Charles was angered by the lawsuit and Mrs. Reagan's comments.

"The lawsuit is outrageous," the spokesman said. "Even a blind person could see that Ray Charles was not, nor ever has been, Stevie Wonder. What a moron. Ray was in fine health and good spirits till he discovered that television coverage had turned into all Reagan, all the time.

"His heart just couldn't take it."
