May 11, 2016 - Our reporter traveled twelve years into the future to see how the war on Iraq will affect our society. One of the many changes will be on America's youth. The war has inspired many new names.

Ms. Brooks' third grade class at High Road Elementary in St. Louis, Missouri exists as a microcosm of this phenomenon. In her class, she has a student named Fallujah, one named Nasiriyah, and one named Kut. "I remember when the war was going on, thinking that those places had interesting names, but I never saw this coming," said Ms. Brooks.

Little Nasiriyah Williams told me that she has a sister named Gaza, and a cousin named Mosul.

Principal Calvin Skinner said he noticed the trend just after the war ended. "When the war ended three years ago, and even before that, really, I started to notice all these names. I guess the parents heard the names on television, and liked the way they sound," said Skinner. "They do have a ring, don't you think?"

A search of school records showed the extent of the new name trend. There is a student named Kabul, as well as two students named Kashmiri, and one named Basra.

A few miles away, at 30th Street Elementary, the trend is also apparent. The principal there, Mike Keller, has noticed the influx of Middle-Eastern names. "I talk to principals from schools all over the district, and we've all noticed that the inner-city schools have this in common. It doesn't affect the kids' education, but it's an interesting little aside," said Keller.

A study showed that the large majority of the war-inspired names belong to girls. "Nasiriyah, Fallujah, names like that sound like girls' names," said Keller. "But, I heard there's a boy over at Ames Elementary named Tel Aviv."
