Man Hospitalized After Bikers Show Him What Love Is
A local man is in stable condition after being taken to a Lubbock area hospital last night. Jim Pembrie, thirty-eight, had just finished singing at a local karaoke bar when he was attacked by a group of motorcycle enthusiasts known as the Lords of Discipline.
Eyewitnesses said that Pembrie had just finished singing the Foreigner classic, I Want to Know What Love Is, for the fifth time when a scuffle broke out. It seems that Mr. Pembrie was warned to pick another song, but refused, citing its haunting lyrics and powerful melody.
Bar owner Sal Amado recalls seeing Pembrie on a couple other occasions. But when Amado noticed an increase in tequila shots following Pembrie's last return to the stage he began to worry.
Opinions were mixed, but some said the Lou Graham standard was never more appropriate given the soul deadening economy and the increase in local cigarette taxes. "You can't argue with a song like that," said one bar regular. "It just gets inside you and makes you want to freakie-deakie."
But others were not so certain. "I guess that's just not a song you sing in a bar like this," said one county official. "Apparently, they took him out back to show him was love was. And then after they showed him what love was they called 911."
After surgery some of the nurses organized a small collection for Mr. Pembrie. "I don't think he has insurance for this," asked one nurse. "This was just wrong," she said. "Clearly the Lords of Discipline have a different idea of what love is."
"Indeed," continued one medical student on call at the hospital. "I've seen what love can do, but this is something else, entirely."
