US Military Creating Its Own Car Bombs to Steal Iraqi Insurents' ThunderJan 5 2005 by Jim Bauman
Our DeadBrain reporter was in Baghdad when he witnessed something most odd. Here's his report:American Marines were shooing people away from a street intersection. They erected a wide cordon of red flags and bright orange tape around the area. Then, two men in heavily padded bomb defusing suits walked a cell phone wrapped with dynamite over to a beat-up car, and placed the bomb within it. After the men left the intersection, a marine yelled, "Fire in the hole! Fire in the hole!" Within seconds, a massive and ear-numbing explosion knocked others and me off our feet. Glass, metal, and other debris flew around us and crashed onto the street and bounced off the nearby buildings. I walked over to the Marine major in charge and asked what that was all about. I asked if there was a larger explosive in the car that couldn't be defused, so they had to destroy it with a smaller charge. "No, it's the start of a new operation called 'Steal Their Thunder'," said the major. "For years now, the U.S. military and Iraqi civilians have lived in fear as to when and where the next IED (improvised explosive device) will explode. Starting today, American military personnel will wrest the element of surprise from the insurgents by detonating IEDs in the city in various clearly marked locations and at certain specific times. "Every effort will be made to protect people from the blasts, but the property damage will be the same as if the insurgents had set off the devices themselves," said the major. I asked him why they're making things worse by causing more physical damage. "We like to see our role here as not making things worse but better. Now, U.S. personnel and the Iraqi people will have some sense of control during this time of chaos. They'll know exactly when and where some of the next damaging attacks will occur. They can plan their day around them. This new operation should improve morale. Furthermore, each area we destroy will be one less place for the insurgents to strike at."
