DHHG Special Report: People, Homes Make Neighborhoods

The DHHG Terror Alert: Farmhouse Sinks in Urban Lofts

There's been a lot of talk lately about the real estate frenzy. While some are reaping huge profits from the sale of property, many others who are trying to buy homes are finding a sad tale of disappointment and despair. The real loser may be all of us, and the loss of our cherished American neighborhoods.

In an effort to put a human face on this story, we recently ventured to a quiet neighborhood in Los Angeles called Beverly Hills. We could have been anywhere in America, with young children playing under the watchful eye of Salvadorian nannies, and yoga-pant clad Moms jogging with private fitness trainers. The occasional personal assistant walking a dog while talking on a cell phone only added to the familiar feeling of small town USA.

We had arranged to meet with Gwyneth P., a new mom who has been searching in vain for a home in this neighborhood. As we drove around the streets of Beverly Hills, Gwyneth looked wistfully out the car window. "I come from these streets. This was my neighborhood. After I had my baby I wanted to move back here so my daughter could experience what I did. This was a great place to grow up. You're five minutes away from all the stuff that kids love - Rodeo Drive, Dior, Chanel. On lazy summer afternoons a whole gang of us would head down to the Beverly Hills hotel for a bowl of ice cream. It was … idyllic in many ways." But sadly, Gwyneth's dream was not to be.

After searching for a house for months, she is discouraged and heartbroken. "All the decent properties are long gone. I looked at a house the other day – it didn't even have a Zen garden. It's unbelievable what's on the market now." Sadly, Gwyneth has been forced to expand her search to Bel Air and Malibu.

So, while some talk about real estate in terms of dollars, let's not forget that a house is also a home, and homes makes neighborhoods. And neighborhoods, after all, are where people live.
