Bush Invites Bode Miller to White HouseMar 10 2006 by NM Puff
The President instructed Card to issue an immediate invitation to Miller, proclaiming that Miller's comment had touched the President deeply. "The President sees Miller as a kindred spirit, a person who understands where true value lies," said Card. Card went on to state that the President always considered himself a great partier and socializer but not of Olympic quality. "He would say to me about his partying days, 'I could have been a contender, Andy.'" To further punctuate his point, Card repeated one of the President's favorite mantras: "Swagger and empty bravado are the best antidotes to failure." Card was asked about inviting United States Olympians who had won medals, such as the US Curling Team, which won the first medal ever for a US team in that sport. Card retorted, "Apparently you just don't get it. Mediocre is OK for this President. From his C-student days at Yale to his military career, this President has made his priorities clear. Miller embodies the presidential ethos." For the record, Miller summarized his Olympic performance by stating that he was "comfortable with what he had accomplished."
