Liberal Special Interest Group Defines List of Appropriate GOP Commercial TopicsMar 16 2004 by Phinneas Zoquo
Tempers on the left side of the political spectrum flared when the Bush Administration launched its first series of re-election campaign commercials. The .5 million ad blitz, though seen as wholly positive by the certain elements of the GOP, sparked major controversy in democratic circles by showing images reminiscent of the Sept. 11th tragedy."I will not tolerate this blatant attempt by the Administration to suggest that George W. Bush was president during the worst tragedy in America's history," an irate Dave Voillon, chairperson for Liberals Against Bush-Inspired Advertisements, said on Monday. "They're obviously trying to make it look like the American people were proud of the way their president handled the immediate aftermath of Sept. 11th, what with his 'feel-good' speeches, genuine tears and promises of justice. They just make me sick." When asked if Bush and his administration should just pretend that September 11th never happened, and completely ignore any reference to it at all, Voillon responded with an emphatic, "Damn right!" Then, as if on cue, he produced a folded piece of notebook paper from his wallet, and shared with this reporter a list of commercial topics and associated images that would not be lambasted by the Democrats. This included: Drilling for oil in the Alaskan Arctic Wildlife Refuge, provided the images depicted elk and caribou sopped in oil and/or getting eaten by wolves after becoming emaciated due to being uprooted from their natural habitat. Pulling out of missile treaties with Russia, but only if footage from Hiroshima, Nagasaki or Dr. Strangelove accompanied the narration. Anything about John Ashcroft. Iraq war footage, assuming the shots were of U.S. soldiers getting sniped, or of Iraqi civilian children getting caught in crossfire. Bush’s illegal alien policy, with the images of course showing 1960s-western-movie-style Mexican banditos running amok through America's neighborhoods, proudly displaying their green cards in one hand while groping a soccer mom with the other. Any references to Bush during the 1970s, or 1980s for that matter. Voillon also offered - as a sort of side note - that, though he wasn't pleased with Bush displaying his wife like a trophy during the spots, he would consider buying TiVo if Bush replaced her with footage of his twin daughters.
