Kerry's Attack Sinks Swift Boat CriticsAug 29 2004 by John Hetherington
Kerry led a one-man invasion of the group's lair in the penthouse suite of the Texas GOP Headquarters, entering through a skylight, intending to resolve the controversy over the group's false claims in an advertisement which, though seen by few, had received considerable attention from a needy media. "He was crazed," reports former Navy captain and Swift Boat Vet for Truth member George Elliott. "I had to hide under a table to avoid the carnage. "It was completely unprovoked, I was sitting there having a drink and a giggle with Karl Rove, who just happened to be over to thank us for our service to the country, when the senator came in and started hollering about 'evidence.'" The "evidence" that appears to have provoked Kerry's attack included several dozen velvet bags embroidered with "$" and "Bush-Cheney '04." Although Kerry supporters are claiming this attack is further evidence of the candidate's strength and courage, some see it differently. As Bush political consultant and Swift Boat-friend Karl Rove notes, "This is just another example of the way John Kerry acts without thinking. We saw this in Vietnam when he turned around his boat to rescue someone with no regard for himself. You wouldn't find President Bush doing that." Many political observers question whether Kerry's attack on the group, which is set to star in its own Fox reality show in which Swift Boat veterans travel the world attempting to ruin the reputations of public servants, dignitaries, and Nobel Prize winners, has helped or hurt his cause. "America likes an ass kicking," explained the headless MSNBC personality Chris Matthews, "but they need to feel it was justified." Matthews contends that voters may begin to ask if the Swift Boat Veterans for Truth were really an imminent threat to them. "I think America needs to feel that this group was about to lie about them. John Kerry has to make that case now or his boat may be sunk." Related Articles The "Not Very Swift" TV Commercial Aug 29 2004
