Loathing Laura: America Turns on Its First Lady - Part 1

In 2002, the Pew Foundation reported that "no one dislikes" Laura Bush. The truth is that many good, decent Americans not only disliked but despised Laura Bush in 2002, and continue to in 2004.

These individuals have remained silent, or at least muffled, in their opposition to the First Lady for fear of either social stigma or the powerful Bush attack machine. But in the face of a high-stakes election, and more Laura Bush media appearances than there is Pepto-Bismol in the world, these individuals appear ready to join forces and finally let their voices be heard.

While the mainstream right-wing media may want us to believe that Laura Bush is "down to earth," "decent," and "not quite the bloodthirsty monster her husband is," a growing number of Americans know better.

"I hate her," Susan Dorell proclaims – and not without good reason. As a highly educated and successful pharmaceuticals executive, Susan rarely spent time with her family, instead reveling in the companionship of her coworkers. "I left the kids to my husband while I worked grueling but satisfying 16-hour days."

But life changed for Susan shortly after George W. Bush's first 100 days in office. "My husband decided that I should be more like Laura Bush and stay home so that he could pursue his hobby, being a model train collector."

Susan explained that while she wanted to leave her husband and children, she knew that when weighed against the example set by Laura Bush, she'd be little more than a pariah. "I might have been successful and happy, but my social standing would be worse than it is!"

Thanks to Laura Bush and the "good wife" image she's managed to parlay all the way to the White House, Susan now lives in her mother-in-law's basement, surrounded by family and model trains.

Increasingly, wives have been pressured into donning empty smiles in support of their husband's efforts to do things they aren't particularly good at. These once happy and satisfied career women are now left with little more than their families and a new sanctimonious attitude.
