Insiders at NBC Nightly News claim that anchor and managing editor Tom Brokaw is in possession of a "secret diary" purported to have been written by National Security Advisor Dr. Condoleezza Rice, but fears releasing it following the flap over CBS News' use of allegedly forged documents.

Among the shocking entries in Rice's diary are descriptions of long, animated conversations the President holds in the mirror of his bedroom with God.

"Our Supreme Leader," Rice wrote in March 2003, "says that God has the funniest little moustache and always wears the same brown shirt - doesn't he know that God looks just like him?"

The diary also provides insights into President Bush's softer side. "Today a bad man got past security and scared The Leader by yelling mean things. The bad man said that The Leader lied and killed his son. Some people are just selfish. Cheney sang The Leader to sleep after we changed him."

The courage of the "wartime President" was also challenged in the dim corridors of the White House's family quarters. "We had to put in night lights because The Leader thought he saw Osama in the shadows. Clearly Democrats are playing mean tricks on him again."

Elsewhere Rice reveals her own ambitions. "[Oprah] Winfrey's a bitch! Someday I'll have her show - and I'll have Stedman."

Not everyone believes that Rice authored the document. NBC White House correspondent David Gregory has been among those cautioning the network not to release the diary.

"The diary is explosive and even a little scintillating," explains Gregory, linked briefly to Rice in tabloids. "I know Dr. Rice very well and, frankly, she isn't as exciting as this."

NBC's reluctance to make public the Rice diary may be understandable. In addition to the recent CBS controversy, NBC itself was forced to defend the quality and accuracy of its own reporting after it was revealed that a recent Dateline NBC investigation that alleged Tony Danza is "less Italian than he acts" was part of a smear campaign organized by former Dateline anchor Jane Pauley, whose daytime talk show competes with Danza's.
