Election Malaise Hangs Over American Chapter of Satirists GuildNov 2 2004 by Jim Bauman
The American chapter of the International Satirists Guild met last month in Glum, Arkansas. The mood was one of angst and apprehension about the election. Our reporter recorded this commentary from Acting Guild President Federico Butlerón IX, standing in for the in-hiding Guild President Douglass Ramssmullett."Our membership is torn on the re-election of Bush. If he gets elected, we'll have a cheap, easy, and plentiful source of fuel for humor Let's face it, even five-year-olds can compose a joke using these ingredients: pretzels, bicycle, mispronounced words, and the President. Yet the countervailing force regarding his re-election is the off-shore movement of humor creation due to the general outsourcing of jobs." Butlerón IX elaborated: "With outsourcing, some humorists could be thrown out of work, because they won't be able to buy the jokes - the foreign taxes and tariffs attached to them may be steep. On top of that, because the jokes will be created in third-world humor mills, they might be corny, said with a strong, native language accent, and may be full of groaning, cultural idiosyncrasies. For example: 'You want curry with that?' and 'It's a beautiful, gnu day!' "Now, let's look at the opposite scenario - Kerry's election. Right away, for half of the electorate, there's nothing funny about that. Boom! You've lost half your audience! Yet, a positive effect could be that more humor will be made in the U.S.A. At the very least, that'll keep the redneck tobacco-chewin' public happy. "But lately, at meetings, I've heard this a lot: 'Federico, I don't feel funny anymore.' "We're losing members to depression, to anxiety, and to wearisome professions such as reality TV show writers and motivational speakers for the annual meetings of Corporate Benefits and Compensation directors. Even I can't take it anymore! I can't go on!" Reaching into his pocket, Butlerón IX drew a revolver from his pocket and pressed it to his temple. Members shouted, "Federico! NO! Don't do it!" But he pulled the trigger, and water sprayed the side of his head. After a deadly pause, cathartic laughter filled the room for twenty-three minutes.
