GOP Taps First Pet for White House in 2008 - Part 2 of 2

In Part 1, we learned about Barney Bush's GOP street cred. Now we look at how other Republicans view his potential 2008 White House Candidacy.

Top Republicans in Congress have rallied round to support the emerging canine candidate. House Speaker Dennis Hastert said that he would have no problem in supporting an "outstandingly cuddly public servant" like Barney for the GOP nomination in 2008.

Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist concurred: "He has shown himself to be a committed and talented political operator over the last four years; I think he would make a great, if slightly hairy, president."

However, not all of the party faithful are in agreement with the idea. Senator John McCain said: "Am I the only one who has noticed that it's a [expletive deleted] DOG? Just because it's a member of the Bush clan doesn't mean it is automatically entitled to run for the highest office in the land!"

California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger, who as a foreign born citizen is disqualified by the constitution from becoming president, is known to be fuming at the possibility of a 'Canis familiaris' becoming the next Commander-in-Chief over him. The muscle-bound deficit buster is considering a campaign to amend the Constitution so that animals are specifically barred from political office.

The Constitution doesn't specifically ban animals from the presidency as it does those of foreign birth, but this would be the first time that either party has nominated one for the top ticket. However, the majority of GOP activists are happy to accept Barney if it means holding on to the White House in 2008.

Like his owner and his owner's father, Barney has his sights set firmly on getting into the Oval Office and into the history books.
