East Coast Media Bias Results in Shunning of Cardinals/Astros Series Coverage
It has come to DeadBrain's attention that, along with the American League Championship Series being played by the New York Yankees and Boston Red Sox, there is a National League equivalent being played by the St. Louis Cardinals and Houston Astros.
"What? National League? Oh, yeah, I remember them," said bar patron Fred Carey. "National League…that's the one where the pitcher hits, right?"
East Coast media-fueled excitement over the Yankees/Red Sox match-up has cast a long shadow over the teams in the National League. Baseball commissioner Bud Selig recently expressed his frustration over this bias.
"We have these guys, these tremendous ball players playing their hearts out, and it goes unnoticed. It's not fair to them, and it's not fair to baseball," said Selig.
Cardinals fan Walter Lang expressed similar frustration. "The Cards had a better record than the Yanks this year. I mean, we got (first baseman Albert) Pujols, (right fielder Larry) Walker, and (center fielder Jim) Edmonds. (Third baseman Scott) Rolen is healthy, and (shortstop Edgar) Renteria is always solid. That's a damn good team. What more do they need to do, rescue a baby from a burning building?"
"Look at our staff," said Astros fan Pete McFarland. "With Starters like (Roger) Clemens and (Roy) Oswalt, the kid (Brandon) Backe, and the cagey vet (Andy) Pettitte...I don't see how we can be beat. But you can't tell by the amount of coverage we get."
Cardinals and Astros players seem unaware of the lack of media attention. Astros pitcher and former Yankee Roger Clemens said, "We go out and play, and try not to read the papers. We'll play whoever wins over there." Clemens did say under his breath that he hopes it's the Sox because, "The Yanks would kick our asses."
Larry Walker, who played for years in Montreal said, "It would be nice to get some media attention, but we hope to get all of it after the Series, when we are the Champions." He added, "We haven't ruled out the baby thing, though."
